At the height of the Cold War, a small Kingdom in South East Asia was dancing to a new beat – music inspired by the British Invasion bands as well as GI Radio in Vietnam.

Prince Norodom Sihanouk was seemingly taking time out to produce movies and records while the war in Vietnam loomed menacingly on his country’s doorstep. Musicians like Ros Sereysothea “The Golden Voice of Phnom Penh“, Sin Sisamouth, Pan Ron were all releasing brilliant 1960s garage sounding singles right up until the moment the Khmer Rouge took control of the country and set about destroying all culture.

In just a few years almost two million Cambodians, including most of musicians, were killed. Today, The Cambodian Space Project is at the forefront of an important cultural revival and is bringing back Cambodia’s lost rock’n'roll with its energetic live shows fronted by the band’s diminutive diva Srey Channthy.

Born into war and poverty, Channthy has always preferred to sing the old songs, in the villages. The old people who remember the 1960s say she is the reincarnation of Pan Ron and at times, the resemblance is uncanny, but Channthy is a singer on a mission and by singing and dancing A Go-Go, around the world with The Cambodian Space Project, Srey Channthy is re-igniting a music culture the genocidal Khmer Rouge could never completely extinguish.
