RE: UN Vesak day and request for copy of DVD to broadcast on SL TV.

Dear all,

Congratulations on the very successful event yesterday. On behalf of the Sri Lankan community in general and the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, Berwick (from which the Sri Lankan Children’s choir and dancers for the procession were provided) in particular, we thank you for organising this event.

Due to the commitments of our Venerables during this period, unfortunately only a few monks from Sri Lankan temples could attend this function. However, there was a large representation from the Sri Lankan community in the audience. Ranjith Soysa, as always, carried a heavy burden on behalf of the Sri Lanka community.

As the 2600 Sambuddha Jayanthi is a very important event for Sri Lanka, the current President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse has played a very active role to celebrate the 2600 Sambuddha Jayanthi successfully in Sri Lanka. He launched a 24 hour radio service dedicated as a Buddhist Channel. Several cities were declared Vesak zones and an International Buddhist Museum has been declared open in Kandy with the participation of 17 Buddhist countries, in the premises of the Temple of the Tooth Relic. He has opened his official residence to the citizens and provided free food for them during this time. He also observed sil (observing the eight precepts) on the Vesak day. For the next three months, the Buddha’s hair relics, loaned from Bangladesh will be on display for the veneration of the public.

For the next year, celebrations of the Sambuddha Jayanthi will continue in Sri Lanka. Therefore I believe that it is important that we show what the Buddhist community in Melbourne has done to celebrate this event. There is a TV in Sri Lanka – The Buddhist – dedicated solely to Buddhist Programmes. If we send a high quality video recording of yesterday’s event to this TV channel it would be interesting for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

If someone can provide this recording, I will arrange to have this sent across and organise it to be shown on The Buddhist TV and perhaps on the main stream TV channels as well.

We could also give this to Channel 31 and our Pay TV Channel Lanka in Melbourne.
